Sakupwanya Empowers Youth Through Sport

HARARE, ZIMBABWE (18 June 2025) – In a strong commitment to youth empowerment and grassroots development, Honourable Pedzai Scott Sakupwanya, Member of Parliament for Mabvuku-Tafara, officially launched the inaugural Hon Pedzai Scott Sakupwanya Annual Schools Tournament. The event, held from June 2 to June 4, saw participation from 14 local schools, comprising 10 primary and 4 secondary institutions.
The three-day sporting event featured both football and netball competitions. Hon. Sakupwanya was present throughout, supporting the young athletes and reaffirming his dedication to improving access to sport and education within the constituency.
Each participating school received a complete playing kit, soccer balls, netball accessories, and a cash grant of US$10,000. Additionally, top-performing schools were awarded further cash prizes:
● 1st Place: $10,000
● 2nd Place: $5,000
● 3rd Place: $2,500
● 4th Place: $1,500
Trophies and medals were also presented to the leading teams in both sports, fostering a spirit of excellence, discipline, and community pride.
In his keynote address, Hon. Sakupwanya emphasized that this initiative is not a one-off event, but part of a broader commitment to uplift Mabvuku-Tafara’s education system and talent pipeline. He announced plans to roll out more programs and resources, aiming to make learning more accessible and inspiring for pupils in the area.
Executives and talent scouts from Scottland Football Club were notably in attendance. Scottland FC has designated Mabvuku as the official nurturing ground for its Youth Academy, signaling a long-term investment in local youth development. This commitment provides clear pathways for standout athletes to advance into professional football through the Scottland FC system.
The launch of this tournament marks a pivotal step in transforming Mabvuku-Tafara into a recognized center of academic and sporting excellence.
